Christmas Desserts in Spain and Italy: Roscón,Panettone and Torrone

The King's Cake or Roscón de Reyes is a special cake eaten on the 6th of January to commemorate the day when the Three Wise men brought presents to baby Jesus and nowadays bring presents to Spanish children. The shape of the cake symbolises a crown and the candied fruits that decorate it are the jewels.Inside the cake there is a bean or a small figurine and whoever finds it has to pay for the Roscón the following year.

In Italy the Panettone , a type of sweet bread loaf , is the traditional Christmas cake. It is originally from Milan and it usually contains raisins and candied fruits. The usual size of this cake is around 1kg, too big for me so I bought a Mini-Panettone.

Italians also have Torrone , made with sugar ,honey ,egg white ,almonds and nuts.My favourite brand  so far is  Murdolo  from Calabria which makes  delicious chocolate covered  Reginetto and Bocconcino.
